C. L. Brumback Primary Care Clinics provide medical care at Glades REACH Fair

Residents of all ages visited the C. L. Brumback Primary Care Clinics’ Belle Glade Clinic Saturday, October 24th where they received medical and pharmacy services as well as assistance signing up for health coverage as part of the 2015 Glades REACH Health Fair. Some patients said it was the first time they had seen a doctor in years.

“We’re here to serve the community by providing compassionate, comprehensive health services to all Palm Beach County residents, whether or not they have insurance,” said Christopher F. Irizarry, MPA, FQHC Executive Director. “I want to thank the Brumback Clinics’ staff and all of the collaborating partners who helped make this event such a success.”

As a result of the REACH Fair, primary care physicians with the Belle Glade Clinic, along with three physicians with Lakeside Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program, saw 19 new adult and pediatric patients. The Belle Glade Clinic made 15 follow-up appointments and Certified Application Counselors with the Brumback Clinics helped 16 residents enroll in health coverage plans. Other services provided at the event included HIV testing and mammogram referrals to the Komen Foundation.

The REACH Fair began 14 years ago as an initiative of the Glades PATCH (Planned Approach To Community Health). At that time it was a small health fair aimed at educating uninsured and underinsured migrant workers about local health care services. It grew over the years to a medical mission where health care services were provided for free. This year the focus changed to help residents establish a medical home where their care is accessible, family-centered, continuous, comprehensive, coordinated, compassionate and culturally effective.

“We are proud to provide access to medical care at the REACH Fair since many people wait all year for this event to see a doctor,” said Belma Andric, MD, MPH, FQHC Medical Director. “This was a great opportunity for residents to make the Brumback Clinics their medical home. I treated one patient at the REACH Fair who was overjoyed to learn that by making our clinic her permanent medical home, she now has access to specialty care that could help improve her deteriorating vision.”

In addition to the Brumback Clinics, which are Federally Qualified Health Centers owned and operated by the Health Care District of Palm Beach County, the REACH Fair was also sponsored by Lakeside Medical Center, the Health Care District’s acute-care hospital in Belle Glade. Other sponsors of the event included: Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Glades Alumnae Chapter; Feeding South Florida; Florida Community Health Centers, Inc.; The Glades Initiative, Inc.; Glades PATCH (Planned Approach to Community Health); Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Belle Glade-Pahokee Alumni Chapter; Lake Okeechobee Rural Health Network (LORHN); Lakeside Medical Center; Bridges at Belle Glade; Susan G. Komen for the Cure South Florida; Wellcare Health Plans and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Iota Omicron Zeta Chapter.

Victoria Arango and her sister-in-law Ligia Garcia, who both live in Belle Glade, visited the Brumback Clinics for the first time the day of the REACH Fair. “Dr. Nikerson Geneve took the time to listen to me and was very caring. On a scale of one to ten, I’d give him a 20!”

“This is the best care and most comprehensive services I’ve received since coming to the U.S. from Cuba 18 years ago,” said Hector Cortina of Belle Glade. “I’ll be back for my follow-up appointment next week.”

Yuna Ablard of Belle Glade said she also appreciated the care that was provided at the Belle Glade Clinic for the REACH Fair as it helps improve the quality of life for residents in the Glades.

“There are a lot of people in this community who need health insurance and medical care,” Ablard said.
